Wonder Woman Comes to DVDBruce Timm, Warner Home Video, DC Comics Produces Animated Film
Warner Home Video and DC Comics are set to release the direct-to-DVD release of Wonder Woman on March 3, 2009.
You first heard about it in the extras for Batman: Gotham Knight, but now the animated direct-to-DVD movie Wonder Woman is set to swing your way. Available in single disc DVD ($19.98 MSRP), double disc ($29.98) and Blu-Ray versions ($34.99), the direct-to-DVD flick puts the Amazon Princess in her first on-screen adventure since the live-action TV series (Mmm, Linda Carter . . .) got canned in 1979. Star Keri Russell (Felicity, Leaves of Grass) headlines a cast that includes Nathan Fillion (Firefly) as Col. Steve Trevor; Alfred Molina (Spider-Man 2) as Ares, the God of War; Virginia Madsen (Sideways) as Hippolyta, the Queen of the Amazons; David McCallum (NCIS) as Zeus, King of the Gods; Rosario Dawson (Clerks 2) as Artemis, Goddess of the Hunt; and Oliver Platt (The West Wing) as Hades, the God of the Underworld. What's It About?Producer Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series) is going for an origins tale for this flick. Here's the synopsis below, courtesy of Warner Home Video. "Wonder Woman begins on the mystical island of Themyscira, where a proud and fierce warrior race of Amazons resides. They have raised Princess Diana, a daughter of stunning beauty, extraordinary strength and incredible fighting prowess. Diana possesses a host of super human powers granted to her by the gods and goddesses of Olympus and her strength and stamina are unparalleled. "When Air Force fighter pilot Steve Trevor crash-lands on the island, the rebellious and headstrong Diana defies Amazonian law by accompanying Trevor back to civilization. Meanwhile, Ares (the God of War) has escaped his imprisonment at the hands of the Amazons and has decided to exact his revenge by starting a world war that will destroy them all. It is up to Princess Diana to save her people and the world by using her gifts to become the ultimate Wonder Woman." DVD Extras? The Wonder Woman 2-Disc DVD and Blu-Ray versions will feature "collectible packaging as well as 185 minutes of incredible bonus features." These include: Wonder Woman: A Subversive Dream - A featurette that examines Wonder Woman's history, and status as a feminist role model. Wonder Woman The Daughters of Myth – This doc examines the historical Amazons, and how DC Comics used Greek myth to develop Wonder Woman's story. There's also audio commentary from Gregory Noveck (Senior Vice President, Creative Affairs, DC Comics), producer Bruce Timm, director Lauren Montgomery and scriptwriter Michael Jelenic. Bruce Timm’s Top Picks - The producer picks his favourite episodes of Justice League/Justice League Unlimited animation that featured Wonder Woman; all personally selected by Bruce Timm, producer of this Wonder Woman feature film. They include the episodes “To Another Shore” and “Hawk and Dove,” which will be available on all versions. Blu-Ray and 2-Disk owners get “Paradise Lost, Parts 1 & 2” as well. Warner Bros. is also including a Digital Copy of Wonder Woman on the DVD which will allow buyers to legally transfer the flick to their favourite portable video player. It will support the following formats: iTunes, and Windows Media Player. Some restrictions apply; you'll need to consult the product packaging for details. There's also a sneak peek at the next DCU Animated Original Movie. Wonder Woman: The Amazon Princess – This appears to be the same featurette that appeared on DVD copies of Batman: Gotham Knight, which featured interviews with the cast and crew. Wonder Woman ropes DVD shelves on March 3, 2009.
